Here’s the latst bottlings of Kilkerran Heavily Peated from Glengyle distillery. This comes by regularly since it’s one of the most interesting heavily peated whiskies in our tasting logs. We had Batch #11 not long ago, which was bottled late 2024 but only arrived in stores early 2025.
You’ll notice this comes in the tall (common) whisky bottle and not the dumpy bottle that is typically used for Springbank-related whisky. Their glass supplier had a fire, causing some sleepless nights. While the Sprinbank production should not have disruptions, Kilkerran release could come in tall bottles for the time being.
Kilkerran Heavily Peated (58,4%, OB 2025, ref. 25/51)
Nose: prefect integration of deep smoky notes (tar, iodine, motor oil) with milder hints of buttery dough, peaches and pears. Then lemony notes, a little chalk and coastal elements. Subtle grassy hints, along with gooseberries. I have the impression they are getting a little gentler.
Mouth: clean and actually quite fruity. There’s pineapple and mango, along with sweet pears and a hint of pink grapefruit. Then plenty of mineral notes, more chalk and a deep sooty note underneath. Very rich peat, bigger than the nose suggested, with a hint of grilled meat that appears after a while.
Finish: long, with coal smoke, some plasticine, lingering fruits like smoked peaches and a mineral waxiness.
Always a good option if you’re into heavily peated whisky. I like the fact that the peat seems to become quite mature now and there’s always a nice fruitiness backing it. Still available from Royal Mile Whiskies for instance.
