GlenAllachie 12 Years – PX wood finish

This GlenAllachie Pedro Ximénez Wood Finish is part of the brand-new wood finishes series from the distillery (see my news post).

It has been matured for over 10 years in American oak barrels and then finished in Pedro Ximénez puncheons, resulting in a 12 year-old whisky, the oldest in the series.

Nose: sweet and candied, with golden raisins, raspberry candy and baked bananas. Round and slightly rummy. Good balance with the (clearly noticeable) plain oak underneath: plenty of vanilla custard and cinnamon.

Mouth: same feeling, actually now the oaky side comes out first in a slightly plankish way that reminds us of American bourbon, including the minty / leathery touch. Toffee and chocolate come later. Cinnamon and clove. Hints of fruit tea. Slightly burnt raisin cake.

Interesting wood-boosted whisky, marked more by wood than by the wine I would say (spoiler: it seems to be a constant in this series). Available from Green Welly Stop or Master of Malt for instance.

Score: 83/100
