Linkwood 1959/1960 (Gordon & MacPhail)

A special vatting of Linkwood 1959 and 1960 casks from Gordon & MacPhail, produced to honour the 1986 royal marriage between Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

I have also reviewed others in the same series: MacPhail’s, Mortlach, Glen Grant and GlenDronach. All worth checking out.

Nose: starts on dusty libraries and a kind of smoky sherry influence, really nice. Wild blackberries and dried figs. Dulce de leche. Also nice waxy notes and orange peel, as well as herbal tea or something of cough syrup. The antique style really, hard to beat.

Mouth: even though the ABV is low, it’s not underpowered and the flavours are nice enough. Some redcurrant and raisin but also a lot of bread, leather and spicy oak. Herbal tea again.

Finish: medium, with minty / citrusy freshness but also burnt wood, leather and fudge.

A remarkably fine whisky again, even though it’s not even the best of the series. Great old-style 1950s-1960s character. Not often seen in auctions, the miniatures seem to pop up more often though.

Score: 91/100
