Clynelish 1996 (DeinWhisky.de)

Independent bottler Sansibar seems to be sitting on a whole stash of Clynelish casks (some named Clynelish, some undisclosed Highlands) and a lot of them are exclusively sold through DeinWhisky.de.

This time we have a Clynelish 1996 in the white label series.

Clynelish 24 yo 1996 (54,9%, Sansibar for DeinWhisky.de 2020, bourbon cask, 283 btl.)

Nose: nice candle wax and paraffin, followed by Dutch sugar loaf, juicy yellow plums and apricots, as well as ripe gooseberries. Hints of Haribo and cotton candy. Touches of vanilla marshmallows. Back to lamp oil. Linden tea as well. Excellent so far.

Mouth: a similar waxy, creamy and exotic fruitiness, with lychee, peach and mango. The fruity side is highlighted further with a drop of water. However there’s also a firm gingery side, evolving to herbal tea and white pepper. A little eucalyptus and green spice. Some green apple in the background, with jasmine, liquorice and a hint of chalk.

Finish: long, slightly green and grassy as the waxy fruits fade away.

The waxy fruitiness of this Clynelish is terrific, but on the palate you start to feel the wood spice. Just great, although I my preference goes out to the sister cask bottled some time ago by the same people. Still available from DeinWhisky.de
