Is it me or do you also feel bored with all these difficult Gaelic names? We never really know how to pronounce it, and we can’t keep them apart.
So there, Bunnahabhain Bàgh Garbh means Rugged Bay. It is finished in Amontillado casks. Originally only available in travel retail, it also made its way to several retailers.
Bunnahabhain Bàgh Garbh 13 yo (50%, OB 2026, Amontillado finish, travel retail)
Nose: rather vibrant acidic, with lots of orange peelings, cranberry and redcurrant, with sweet fig jam underneath. Then also the saline notes appear. Hazelnuts and green walnuts. Keeps developing on orange marmalade and sour cherry. Later also hints of candied ginger and a peppery kick.
Mouth: classic coastal notes at the centre, with a good dose of warming oak spice. A bit of heat. Rich hints of dark honey, toasted malt and clove studded oranges. The combination of (blood) orange, cranberries, sour cherries and sultanas makes it really juicy and sappy. Hints of dark chocolate, pepper and tobacco later on. Then also walnuts and a bittersweet herbal edge.
Finish: quite long, sweet and spicy with chocolate and a salty note.
The coastal Bunnahabhain profile is still here, and the Amontillado adds a sweet and sour sherry profile that I really like. A really attractive travel retail option. I found it at Whiskysite.nl. Remember this is a 1 litre bottle so reasonable value for money.
