Indra Agneya

Indra Agneya

We’ve had the Indri single malt from India before, with pretty good results. Especially the tropical vibe of the Indri Triple Cask was really attractive. Today we’re trying Indri Agneya, a late 2025 expression that combines regionally peated barley with maturation in bourbon and PX sherry casks.

Indra Agneya (46%, OB 2025)

Nose: slightly dusty smoke appears first, although there’s already a rich fruity layer underneath. Smouldering sawdust, or the burnt edge of a freshly sawn plywood. Then a sweet and sour apple note with hints of figs. Dark herbal honey. A bit funky.

Mouth: more fruits now, in a slightly tropical way. Mango and papaya have a (brief) appearance and are then mixed with berries. However the sharp and slightly acrid peat seems to take away some of its luscious character. As if someone poured cough syrup and aspirin into your fruit juice. The drying hint of sawdust is still there, along with a drop of cold coffee. Later also lemon juice, cloves and crushed black peppercorns.

Finish: medium, with some woody heat coming out. Liquorice, pepper and a sharp resinous edge too.

Tropical fruits and smoke can mingle very well, but here it feels unbalanced. I suppose it’s young, so it comes across as a shortcut that didn’t work out as intended. Then there’s also the woody side that bothers me. Also available in a glass set.
