This will have to be a quick review, as typing the name Bunnahabhain Stiùireadair has taken up most of my time already. Isn’t being able to recall or pronounce it a consideration when chosing a ‘charming’ Gaelic name? It’s pronounced Stu-Radhur by the way.
In any case Stiùireadair is the latest release from this Islay distillery. It was matured in first-fill and second-fill sherry casks and bottled at 46.3%. I’ve heard it was launched to take away some pressure from the 12 Year Old, supposedly because stocks are running low.

Bunnahabhain StiùireadairNose: medium sherried, in a fairly dry, nutty way. Malty core, baked bread, a hint of blackberries and dried apricot. Toasted nuts, with some caramel, chocolate and light coastal notes. Not bad, though probably a bit younger than 12 years.
Mouth: less impressive now. Initially quite hot and spirity, with peppery notes, roasted nuts and a lightly bitter edge. More creamy notes towards the end (toffee, raisins, cake, mocha) as well as some salty notes.
Finish: medium long, on malt, berries and chocolate.
It’s fine but I’ve had better Bunnas than Stiùireadair. That reminds me I have to try a recent batch of the Bunnahabhain 12 at 46.3%. Around € 40-45.
