Blended Highland Malt 1976 (Sansibar / DeinWhisky)

Blended Highland Malt 1976 (Sansibar / DeinWhisky)

DeinWhisky has a great track record of Sansibar ‘white label’ bottlings exclusive to them. There was the Secret Irish, the Mortlach 1998 or the Clynelish 1996 for instance. In 2025 they also released a lovely Blended Scotch 1976.

Now there’s a Blended Malt 1976, aged for no less than 50 years, celebrating the 10th anniversary of DeinWhisky.

Blended Highland Malt 50 yo 1976 (49%, Sansibar for DeinWhisky.de 2026, bourbon cask, 268 btl.)

Nose: a lot of dense lacquered notes. Varnished floors, with added peppermint. Underneath there are some pineapple cubes, juicy apples and orange peels. Then generous vanilla, with a hint of coconut and marzipan in the background, moving closer to an old grain whisky perhaps. A slightly drier note of tobacco leaf and walnut appears as well.

Mouth: still quite intense, with a firm woody and herbal profile. Not too dry though, there’s a hint of sweet almond and salted caramel, along with bright apple, some herbal tea and more resinous elements. Then more leathery hints appear, with baking spice (mainly nutmeg) and tobacco. Some drying oak as well, along with a mild bitterness.

Finish: long, on orange peels, with pleasant oak spice that is not overdone. Some roasted nuts and caramel stay strong.

This is not necessarily more malty than its “blended Scotch” predecessors, but it is certainly a little more bourbonny. A lot of great varnished notes and a little less fruitiness in this case. Overall very harmonious. Still available from DeinWhisky.de.
