Speyside Region 1977 (Maltbarn)

Yes, more undisclosed Speyside whisky. This time perhaps a little darker than most of the others. If anything it reminds me of the Whisky-Doris and Sansibar releases back in 2016-2017.

I believe this Speyside 1977, 40 years old, was only available to members of the Maltbarn mailing list, with so little bottles available it doesn’t make sense to distribute them, I guess.

Speyside 1977 - MaltbarnSpeyside 40 yo 1977
(46,3%, Maltbarn 2018, sherry cask, 57 btl.)

Nose: more sherry influence indeed, and maybe less Fino than the others. Leafy, earthy notes, with hints of cedar wood, cardamom and tobacco. Fresh red plums, soft raspberry and mirabelles. Plenty of waxed furniture, bergamot and mint tea. Just a touch of incense too.

Mouth: really minty and oak-forward, with sour touches. Ginger, eucalyptus, menthol and darjeeling tea. Subtle hints of cherry. Walnuts. Tobacco again. Less of the tropical fruits that we’re always looking for here, maybe a hint of sour pineapple and fruit tea. It lacks a bit of stamina, but the profile is great.

Finish: long, drying, with hints of cocoa, lemon oil and minty notes.

Pretty excellent again, perhaps with a slightly heavier sherry influence than usual, and aromatic wood notes. Happy moments. Originally € 380, now sold out.

Score: 91/100
