This is the latest Tamdhu Batch Strength release as far as I know. It is the Oloroso-centered Cask Strength whisky which helped to renew our interest in the distillery after their total makeover (and exclusive focus on sherry maturation) in 2013.
Tamdhu Batch Strength (57,8%, OB 2019, Batch #004)
Nose: nice. Clean sherry, albeit a bit ‘modern’ in the sense that the young, seasoned European oak strands out. Chocolate cake, walnuts and hazelnuts. Leafy and earthy notes, with (ginger)bread. Dried apples and a little vanilla in the background. Quite rich.
Mouth: again the spicy / earthy side of sherry maturation. Brown bread, black pepper and cinnamon, dark caramel and chocolate. Plenty of cloves and oak char, there’s even an echo of American rye whiskey at times. Hints of espresso. and liquorice.
Finish: long, on roasted nuts, dark toffee and gingerbread.
Tamdhu has found a style of its own, bringing a good share of European oak sherry casks to the mix. It may be lacking a fruity component but other than that I would say it’s pretty faultless. Better than Batch #003 in my book. Available from The Whisky Exchange or TyndrumWhisky for instance.
