A Speyside Distillery 1992 ‘Marriage of Casks’ (SMOS)

Undisclosed Speyside whisky from 1992, what could that be? Well, some of them led us to Glenlivet. Others claimed it was blending stock with no clue whatsoever. Apparently most of these originated from a large scale vatting that was then reracked into different refill barrels not long ago. As a consequence, most of them are now still close together.

In any case this is part of the Marriage of Casks series from Elixir Distillers.

A Speyside Distillery 31 yo 1992 (48,3%, Single Malts of Scotland ‘Marriage of Casks’ 2023, 806 btl.)

Nose: a zingy mix of gooseberries and lemon candy, evolving to apple pie and banana custard. Hints of orange cake, even some strawberries with cream. Then gentle bread and honey tones, as well as some buttercups and sunflower oil. Some waxed papers and dried thyme as well. Highly polished, with medium complexity.

Mouth: plenty of orchard fruits against a background of buttery, creamy notes. Greener fruits now, like pear, apple and gooseberry, but also peach, pleasant echoes of lychee and light grassy touches. Then a nice peppery kick, some mint leaves, elderflower and lime cordial.

Finish: medium long, with lingering fruits, soft oak, some herbal tea and a hint of sweet cereals.

A nicely mature, laid-back style with plenty of fruits, a light waxy side and well dosed oak. Simply a nice all-rounder in my opinion. Still available from The Whisky Exchange of Master of Malt.
